SWIT – Science Women of Italy – Exhibition in San Marino

SWIT: Female Italian Scientists Lighting up the Future

An Exhibition Celebrating Italian Women Leading the Way in STEM

In San Marino, the Exhibition “SWIT – Science Women of Italy”: 21 Portraits of Female Excellence in Science

From 26 May to 8 June 2025, the Embassy of Italy in San Marino will host the exhibition “SWIT – Science Women of Italy” at Palazzo SUMS. The exhibition showcases 21 Italian women scientists whose stories and research represent outstanding examples of excellence, inspiration, and commitment in the scientific field.
The initiative is held under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as the Secretariats of State for Foreign Affairs and for Education and Culture of the Republic of San Marino.

Organized in collaboration with the Cultural Institutes of San Marino, the exhibition offers a journey through the many fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) highlighting the significant contributions of women to Italian scientific research.

Through bilingual panels (Italian and English), interactive QR codes, videos and digital screens, visitors can explore the stories of the featured scientists and gain deeper insights into the cultural, historical, and environmental contexts in which they have made their mark. The aim is to promote the role of women in science and to encourage younger generations to pursue studies and careers in STEM fields.

Two Key Events

The exhibition will also provide opportunities for dialogue and in-depth discussion through two public events:

  • Thursday, 29 May 2025, at 4:00 PM: Discussion with scholars from the University of San Marino.
  • Thursday, 5 June 2025, at 4:00 PM: Conversation with Ms Maria Cristina Fossi, professor at the University of Siena and a leading figure in the field of terrestrial and marine ecotoxicology at both national and international levels.

This exhibition is a celebration of female Italian scientists who have revolutionized – and who continue to revolutionize – the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The evocative title, SWIT – Science Women of Italy, suggests a ‘turning point’, a switch that ignites new perspectives and lights up the future, stressing the pivotal role played by women in how we see and understand the world.

By championing female participation in STEM and highlighting the strategic contributions of women to scientific and technological progress, the project reflects the institutional commitment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote the innovative policies behind cultural change.
