About – Mediterranean Pilot Actions for Climate Change Adaptation
Mediterranean coastal communities are increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change, including rising sea temperatures, biodiversity loss, invasive species, and more frequent extreme weather events. These pressures threaten local economies, ecosystems, and food security, especially in areas dependent on fisheries and tourism. The project aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of Mediterranean coastal communities to climate change by focusing on ecosystem resilience and sustainable management of marine resources. This initiative involves a transnational consortium of environmental NGOs, universities, and research institutions from Italy, Türkiye, Jordan, and Tunisia. The activities address, through demonstrated solutions and tested pilot actions, various aspects of climate change adaptation such as the management of invasive species, restoration of specific marine ecosystems, and development of local climate adaptation tools.

The Project Aims to:
-
Restore coastal ecosystems and enhance their resilience to climate-related stressors.
-
Support sustainable fisheries through diversification and improved food value chains.
-
Strengthen local climate adaptation planning by promoting participatory tools and governance mechanisms.
Expected Results:
-
Improved resilience of coral reefs and seagrass meadows in 10 pilot areas.
-
Greater sustainability and adaptability in local fisheries and seafood consumption.
-
Enhanced community awareness, participation, and governance in climate adaptation processes.
The project directly involves and benefits:
-
100 fishers and 50 small-scale fisheries operators adopting sustainable practices.
-
20 Marine Protected Area managers and 20 policymakers trained in climate-smart governance.
-
Local communities and students engaged in education, restoration, and resilience-building activities.
-
An estimated 1,000,000 people living in pilot areas positively impacted by project outcomes.
The initiative is implemented through a transnational partnership of scientific institutions, local authorities, and marine conservation organizations, working together to advance climate resilience and sustainable blue economy across the Mediterranean.
